Clearing Bathroom Drains in Portage

When a homeowner sees not one but several bathroom drains draining slowly, it’s time to call in the professionals. Some of our customers in Portage noticed that both their master bath and sink were draining very slowly so they called Dan Wood to take a look. Our plumber found a few spots in their pipes that were very clogged. After the plumber cleared the pipes of all the clogs, the bathroom drains were soon draining well again.

There are other problems with backed up drains in addition to the inconvenience of not being able to take a bath, shower or use the sink. When bathroom drains quit working, the backed up water can contain health hazards for the family. The bacteria and germs from the sewer system are in your home, exposed to the open air. That why’s it’s so important to get the problem fixed as soon as possible by a nearby Portage plumber. Getting the wastewater out of your house quickly means less exposure to noxious water.

One of the most common problems that cause clogs in pipes are tree roots that have grown into the sewer lines. These invasive roots can cause major headaches for homeowners because they are so difficult to get rid of. Here are four ways of getting tree roots out of your sewer line:

Cutting the roots

The roots are removed by sending a rotating auger head down through the sewer line. This head cuts the roots off, but these roots will grow again after only a short time.

Removing the roots with chemicals

Chemicals are used to kill the roots so they can’t grow into the pipe. Chemical compounds like copper sulfate crystals create a poison zone around the outside of the pipe, killing the roots before they ever reach the pipe.

Using a hydro-jetter

Hydro-jetters use water and other mechanical means to clear away the roots in a pipe. After the hydro-jetter is used, the sewer pipe is usually treated with chemicals to kill any remaining roots.

Digging up the roots

If the sewer line has been too damaged by tree roots, the whole line may need to be dug up and replaced. Running a video camera through the sewer will usually reveal the extent of the damage.
