Providing Ground Fault Interrupters Services to Battle Creek, Kalamazoo, Portage, South West Michigan, and surrounding areas.

As a kid, you probably would have grown up seeing your grandparents often replace fuses or in recent times reset circuit breakers when there was a sudden voltage surge or current fluctuation in your Michigan homes.

In these modern days, these fuses and circuit breakers are fast replaced by what is known as Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters or GFCI. These devices are also referred to as "complete shock solutions" as they prevent you from being electrocuted. A Michigan GFCI can be a circuit breaker or a receptacle.

These Ground Fault Interrupter devices are designed to detect even the smallest leakage of current, say about 5-30 mile-amperes. They operate within a very short time frame of about 1/40th of a second to interrupt the current flow. They contain a differential current transformer that works by studying the current balance between two conductors.

Arc Fault Interrupters

Arc-fault circuit interrupter breakers (AFCI), according to the National Electric Code (NEC), must now be included in all new constructions. These new breakers are separate from the ground fault interrupter (GFI) breakers already installed in your home. The GFI breakers protect you from electrical shocks while the these breakers are designed to protect your San Francisco home from fire hazards.

How do AFCI Breakers Work?

The GFI breakers in your home protect you from the electrical current created when hot wires touch ground wires. They do so by tripping the circuit breaker and shutting off your power.

The problem is that the hot wire may not make consistent contact with the ground or neutral wires. This can happen if your insulation is going bad or if your wires have become loose or corroded. When this occurs, the intermittent contact causes an arc of heat to continuously build, creating a possible fire hazard. The new AFCI breakers can detect the arc and trip the breaker to prevent a fire from starting.
