What Exactly is an Air Handler, and Why Does it Matter?
Air handlers are the part of your HVAC system that regulates air flow through your home’s ductwork. Although it may look like a simple metal box, there are several components within. The components can include the blower, coils, dampers, filter changes and other parts to ensure your home stays cool.
Because the air handler is tasked with regulating the air flow, it can actually help your outside unit (the condenser) be more efficient. More efficient use of energy means lower electric bills and a longer lifespan for your HVAC unit. Keep in mind that the air handler doesn’t just distribute cool air through your home, it also will regulate warm air in the winter months.
Common Air Handler Problems
There are a few common air handler problems that can impact the efficiency of your HVAC unit and the comfort of those that live in your home. These issues are relatively easy to repair for a trained technician:
- Air flow- it is all too common for a blockage to occur in your ductwork or for filters to be left unchanged. Both of which will cause poor air flow to the rest of your home, making it seem like the rooms are never cool or warm enough. When filters remain dirty for an extended period of time, the dust can cause problems for the evaporator coils and other components within the air handler
- Blower motor malfunction- unfortunately, sometimes electrical components die. This can often be the case for the blower motor. The issues can range from being a bad relay to a control board, or the actual blower motor can give out. Trained technicians will know how to diagnose and repair the problem quickly.
- Dust and debris- in addition to keeping your filters clean, maintaining an air handler includes cleaning it. When there is a lot of dust, debris, and dirt, you may notice that your air conditioning unit freezes up often. Proper cleaning and care can easily prevent this
